Psychology of Fashion and Style

Blogs, models, clothing lines, celebrities, magazines, street…

We find fashion everywhere…

But why is it so important? Why do we put so much of their effort into our looks and appearance?

Why do we look at magazines, bloggers, brands? Why do we put so much money, time and effort on how we look and what we wear?

I don’t know why but I always liked clothes. When I was just a little girl I could change my outfit every hour, I was always going through my Granny’s closet and try on everything I found there, mostly big hats and high hills. When I was 2 years old I wanted to wear thick jacket during summer, withouth any logical reason and when I was 8 I went to the city with two different socks (one large and one small – Like Pippy Longstockig), because I wanted to be »fashionable«….

I am very curious and want to know  why are things as they are… So I wanted to find out why fashion, clothes, style and apperance is so important to people

First we have to distinguish between Fashion and Style.

In short, style is our ability to show the world how we see ourselves. Meaning, we choose certain looks, clothes, accessories, to show our identity. Style shows a hint of our personality. It is a reflection of who we are, what we are interested in, what we believe in and what we value…

We can look at style as a “tool” that helps us present ourselves to the outside world. Style communicates who we are.

While style is somethig personal, fashion on the other hand is something external. Fashion is changing constantly, while style can remain the same.

Style and fashion obviously walk hand in hand. But style is something we choose, while fashion is something that is presented to us. Fashion fades, while style remains. Fashion is industry, while style is personality.

And if we like fashion as a art we incorporate it to our style.

I see it like that: Fashion give us possiblities so that we can choose our style in which we will present ourselves to the world.

Ok, so we understand now what is style and what is fashion

But we still don’t know why is it such a big deal?

Many research show the impact style and fashion has on us and on how other see us…

So »Dress to impress« is not just a popular, fancy quote, but it has some truth in it. We tend to dress in a certain way, not only to show our personality, but also to make a good impression.

This goes hand in hand with a fact that our apperance is playing key role in the game of first impressions. While first impression can obviously be false, people quickly make judgements about another by the way they appear.

On the other hand, how we dress also has a major impact on the way we see ourselves, the way we feel and the way we act….

It’s not particualarly the clothes, it’s what we think about ourselves while wearing a certain piece that has an impact on our feelings, emotions and behaviour.

For example: we find leggings very sexy, we blieve that girls in leggings are very attractive, so we put on leggings when we want to impress the boy we like…

And if we belive that high wasisted pants are not for short girls, we will never feel confortable, sexy or confident wearing them, no metter how fashionable they are…

In the picture below you can find some interesting facts about psychology of clothes, fashion and style:

As you see the way we dress has quite an impact on the way we see ourselves, the way we feel, the way we act and the way others see us and treat us.

Our apperance is obviously not the most important thing in our lives and I still believe we should never ever judge another person by the way they appear…

But style is the way we express ourselves, it represents who we are, what we like, what we value, etc. It’s like our personal art, it shows who we are withouth any words…

Style is a part of you, it’s who you are, so don’t try to be someone else, don’t blend in, when you were born to simply be yourself.
